The Hanging Rock
The Hanging Rock is a digital illustration built in four distinct stages — from an initial clean line drawing through to a fully rendered night-scene painting. A cracked rock suspended by roots drips glowing drops of light down onto an illuminated mushroom. The piece explores texture, atmosphere, and the transition from concept to colour.
The Concept
A rock — cracked, ancient, suspended by twisted roots — hangs impossibly in a night sky. From its underside, glowing drops fall like slow rain onto a mushroom waiting below. The piece grew from a single sketch into a fully painted scene, each stage adding depth, colour, and atmosphere.
Stage 4 of 4
The finished painting. Texture is added to the rock — cracked and weathered. The background becomes a star-flecked night sky. The glowing drops bloom with light, and the mushroom cap is rendered in warm orange and rust. Atmosphere and depth tie the whole scene together.
